I can’t see out of my window because I can’t see through these tears from being so cold I have to wear my coat to bed because I can’t afford to use the heating. I can’t see through these tears of not being able to afford the £50 rise in my rent, and of not wanting to have to work even harder cleaning pots and floors in the restaurant kitchen just to give my minimum wage to my landlord. I can’t see from my window because I am too tired of this life to lift my head up, and I can no longer see its colours or a future.

The click of camera, loud in the silence. People sway slightly in the breeze. A murmur passes between open lips. Loud as a jet engine in the silence. A teacher turns, scowling, and faces the child. The child, his face bleak and cold, eyes the teacher. The child frowns, opened his mouth as if to say something and shuts it quickly again after a menacing look appears in the teachers eyes. The child frowns again, as if concentrating on something, and looks away, retreating into the darkness of his mind.

Everyone turns, looking round them. Everyone, exactly the same, stares blankly ahead of them. Into the emptiness in front, the nothingness of the silence, so loud it seemed. No movement broke the stillness save for the cameraman’s hand. CLICK! The shutter sounds. A sigh of relief sweeps over the crowd like a wave. Tensed shoulders are released and people, holding their breath unconsciously, exhale thankfully. People turn to look at one another and smile for the first time in what seemed like a century. Muscles relax and immediately, a man is shouting things, magnified immensely by the oversized megaphone but no one is really listening, everyone is just glad it is over. It is over. It felt good to roll those words around my mouth. It felt good to think and ponder, without heed, and to mull over those words slowly. It was over but looking through the window I couldn’t help wondering when they’d be back…

Living in an urban area such as Lewisham, human beings need all the views of the sky, trees and open spaces they can get. I love coming downstairs in the early morning as my front room window is framed by green rose bushes, window basket, tall perenials, wonderful flowers. I see no cars and opposite are hedges and a tree. On to the dining room and kitchen, where windows are framed by green baskets, tubs full of potting plants and colour, bronze, yellow, green shrubs all laid out like a painting. I organised this for my benefit. Others benefit from my front garden as do insects, bees, butterflies and what birds are left. I am blotting out ugly, mis-matched cottage extensions and creeping kitchen extensions and decking which gobble up that land we have. Development is gobbling up light, air, space. It is no good for any of us.

A moment of peace and comforting pleasure swells the good feeling of being alive.

It may only be temporary for there are chores to be done, and reality must be faced by us all. But the moment is mine and sets me up fine.

My favourite view of Lewisham has to be Ladywell Fields. It stretches far and wide. The Ravensbourne river runs through the park and it is a great plce for walking and cycling. There is also a small cafe where people can eat and drink at their own convenience. The fresh air and ambience has to be admired.

If you walk through the park you may be likely to come across squirrels, birds of many sorts and trees which are hardly ever seen in the woods, plus dogs and cats of many breeds. There is also an area for children to play. This playgroup consists of many devices which children can use and in a sense they are learning many things which both parents and children can partake in. Also there is a skateboard area which many people particularly teenagers can use.

The park is currently in the process of being renovated so there will be many extra constructions which will develop in the future. Nearby there is an athletics track which is used to host many events. I myself have run many times when I was younger in my school days.

Last but not least the park gives a sense of relaxation if you want to get away from the smoke and fumes of the town environment. In the spring and summer it provides a peaceful respite.
